সুফিয়া কামাল


Known as a poet and activist, Sufia Kamal was born on June 20, 1911. Her first short story, ‘Sainik Bandhu’ shows how passionate she was for women empowerment. Her first book of poems, ‘Sanjher Maya’ brought her in the forefront of her contemporaries. In fact, the forward of her first book of poems was written by Kazi Nazrul Islam. The most noteworthy aspect about Kamal’s writings is that they portrait the issues of women and promote women education and women empowerment. She was also the supporter of Bengali language and Bengali culture that is commonly found in her poems and stories. Her other well-known works are ‘Mrittikar Gran’, ‘Ekatturer Diary’, ‘Benibinyas Samay To Ar Nei’, ‘Ekale amader Kal’, etc. She is the recipient of the Bangla Academy Award for Literature, Ekushey Padak, Muktadhara Puraskar, Jatiya Kavita Parishad Award, Women’s Federation for World Peace Crest, Begum Rokeya Padak, and Independence Day Award. She died on November 20, 1999.
